iPhone Review

Ok, so I don't have an iPhone so I totally don't have the right to give it my review, but I can still have an opinion.

Basically from the vast reviews I've read, I think that overall it works very well, and all in all, as advertised. As for this insane hype around it, I agree with [http://leoville.com Leo} on this one, that basically everyone hates their phone for the most part. It's awkward to use, the screen sucks, and they wish they didn't have to carry their iPod AND cell phone at the same time. This sums everything up into one device, and everybody went banana's over it.

In regards to these little software annoyances. (eg. Keyboard can't go landscape 'cept in Safari; Mail app sucks, Bluetooth is headset only, No Flash/Java) are…just that. Software annoyances, that most probably will be upgraded as time goes on. We know they will actually push out software updates, because they kept their word for Apple TV and delivered YouTube as a bonus.

Of course the question is, "Am I buying one?" and for now the answer stays no.

  • Doesn't work in Canada (yet, and some have shown ways to circumvent that. I still need a phone though ;-))
  • Apple is literally pocketing almost double the actual price of device, which means as they get less greedy and they sell more of them, prices have to go down. Plus like the iPod I can see there being an iPhone Mini (don't know about the iPhone shuffle though!)

Some of my other complaints such as lack of video recording on the camera, and other features are upgradeable and I see Apple updating the firmware very soon.

Uptime Celebration

So, I know I haven't actually had 93 days of 100% uptime. There have been a few glitches where I accidentally disabled the network interfaces over SSH and some issues beyond my control. (DNS, Internet, which are now much more in my control. I now serve as backup DNS for the AHTR domain.)

So the website hasn't been "Up" per se for the past 93 days, but my crappy little Dell Dimension 2200 has been jetting along it's little fans (and they sure are small) for 93 day straight.

My goal is to keep running throughout the summer, and hopefully make it 120 days. Either way, 93 days is more than any other server at AHTR can claim.

So in celebration, I'm giving away 2 dozen Apple iPhones 8GB.

Just kidding. They aren't even being sold in Canada yet, and I barely have enough money to buy one for myself, but seriously guys, this thing is awesome. If you haven't watched the tour, do so now, you will be even more amazed.

So happy uptime everyone. 2 days until I'm done school, and 6 days until iPhone!

Downtime

We'll be going offline for a few hours to resolve some long standing routing issues on our setup. We should be back before the morning.

Gotta Love the Beatles

I was reading up on one of my favorite Beatles songs, A Day in the Life, when I came across this quote.

_What I did there was to write, at the beginning of the twenty-four bars, the lowest possible note for each of the instruments in the orchestra. At the end of the

twenty-four bars, I wrote the highest note each instrument could reach that was near a chord of E major. Then I put a squiggly line right through the twenty-four bars,

with reference points to tell them roughly what note they should have reached during each bar… Of course, they all looked at me as though I were completely mad._

-George Martin

If you listen to the song, that's pretty much what it sounds like, and it doesn't sound particularly good, but it is interesting and very Beatles.

I <3 Beatles.

Ideal places to have a heart attack

Today I was eating in a little fast food place across the street from a major hospital in our city. While enjoying my dinner it occurred to me that of all the places to have a sudden illness, this would be it, you have 30 nurses getting their coffees and you're within 100 meters of the hospital.

Comforting.

WWDC 2007

So here's what's happened.

  1. Apple has lost it's mind and released Safari for Windows.
  2. Apple announces THE SAME Leopard features at WWDC
  3. Apple redesigns their website

and a few other things…

Obviously you can see my disappointment in seeing Safari on Windows. Sure, it makes sense. You're going to have millions of people in just a few short weeks using iPhones and it would be crazy not to offer a parallel browsing experience on their PCs. And after all, Apple is a great Windows developer.

I'm also not to impressed with the Leopard feature demonstration. They're basically just showing the same features over again, and I wish Jobs would show us the other 280 instead of reshowing us the ones he showed us at MacWorld. I'm still excited for Leopard because while careening around the Leopard mini-site I found some intriguing features, even subtle ones, like a great new DVD player and an improved Terminal.

I also like the new website, well done Apple. It's also great that Leopard will be $129 across the board. Yay.

It's also great that iPhone supports third-party apps. If it turns out I can bring one to Canada, I would probably switch to Rogers and drop the 500 dollars for one.

What I really missed from the Keynote was:

  1. iWork & iLife. Seriously where the duck is Apple's mind here? It's halfway through '07 and you still haven't released new iSuites
  2. ZFS. The revolutionary new Filesystem that Sun themselves declared Apple was going to use wasn't even mentioned to my knowledge. Is it there or did they trash it at the last second?
  3. New Macs. I don't know why I expected new Macs, but I did. I would like to be blown away with something super thin, powerful, and efficient, and I haven't.

Anyways, maybe I'll change my mind after watching the official Keynote video, but right now I'm not impressed Steve. Or did I just set to high of expectations? Oh well…

New Website!

Ok so I just went for it.

As you can see, new design. I basically just went down to OWD and looked at some nice designs and picked one, implemented it, and in the meantime upgraded joleblog to .8 "blu" for my backend.

I also wanted to have my twitter status and my del.icio.us on there, so now I do.

Enjoy!

June Report

It''s been a month since my last update, sorry.

Still nothing elaborate, but basically:

I want to blog about anything and everything, BUT I want to use the new version of joleblog but it's not stable or complete enough. In order to stabilize I would need to spend a lot of time working on it, but I have no time for that, which makes me want to blog. Thus, it becomes a vicious cycle.

But hopefully this summer things will simmer down a bit, there won't be any surprise Drama technical events or insane exams to pray through, and I might be able to sit down and code joleblog (assuming I have time when I'm working.)

There are a few little realizations I have had in the past month though.

  1. I really enjoy tech theatre, sound, and video. I've been doing a lot of it, and never have I enjoyed myself so much as these past few weeks doing shows and planning videos. I love working with equipment.
  2. Web Design might not be for me. I entered a web design competition, which I didn't win, (I was up against people who actually have taken web design courses and are two years older than me) but I still found myself wanting to be doing the event next door: video production. I didn't really enjoy doing all the web design.
  3. I have accepted my geekdom more than ever. After reading several articles online about "how to date a geek guy" (google it), I have a renewed sense of self-respect. At times I'll feel a bit lonely or feel like maybe I should try to be less of a geek but when the day wraps up I'll still be back here writing joleblog or or listening to Security Now! and absorbing all that geeky stuff. I have accepted that I suppose, and am enjoying the thought that someday someone else might appreciate me for my geekiness.

In case you didn't catch the first part, joleblog development has been suspended temporarily (although I admit I wanted to suspend it permanently.) Goals have been shifted though. The goal now is :

  • Learn more about PHP, AJAX, and programming
  • Have a cute little blog system for my own website
  • Maybe have something to show people who are interested in my work

I've given up on the idea that somehow it'll be this fabulous efficient blogging system, and that I will use it for all my clients. No. It will never be stable enough for that, and will never be secure enough for that. We'll leave that to textpattern, which I have begun to reuse as my main CMS control for any new clients.

See you soon!

What happened to email?

I've been getting more and more invitations to Facebook these days, and quite frankly I'm sick of it.

I wouldn't mind getting one to see what it's like, compare it to other services, and see what this supposed great thing is all about.

But in general, what I find is that any social networking web application ends up being a remash of the Internet. Everyone begins to develop this irritating habit of sending every message by their favorite social networking messaging service. If you had friends on Nexopia, Facebook, MySpace, you would have to check three different websites PLUS anything else you might be using (or your friends want you to use.)

The fact is, it's a waste of time. I maintain a decent website, with my pictures and what not, and I'm happy with it. I don't feel pressured to release more personal information that I want to, and there's no pressure to post pictures of myself or any of that.

But it all comes down to practicality for me. Why should I maintain a Nexopia, MySpace, and Facebook profile IN ADDITION to a website? Why should I check my "messages" on three different services PLUS my email, of which some people posses multiple. Even then though, there's a major difference here.

In the IM world, most people don't have a problem if they have friends on all different services, because there are tons of clients that do all of them at once. But when it comes to web services, there's no easy way to unite them.

Perhaps that should be a new Web 2.0 project.
