joleblog 0.7 Released!

Hurray! joleblog 0.7 is officially released to the public in beta for today! You can download 0.7 from the Downloads Page on Google Code.

It's very undocumented in terms of installation, but I'm sure you can figure it out if you're apt enough. Have fun!

Gallery Fixed (again)

Sorry if the Gallery wasn't being itself lately, no one cough trent cough notified me that short PHP open tags had been disabled.

For some random reason zenphoto was scattered with them here and there, so I had to go through and fix that.

Christmas and Boxing Day Tech Roundup

Well my Boxing Day shopping is done, and my large purchase have cooled down (for now). Here's a roundup of what I got and bought, and what my thoughts of the item were. In order of

receivement.

This beautiful thing charges my high-capacity batteries in about 15 minutes or less, blasting air to keep those AA's cool. Will CERTAINLY make me more willing to go out and take pictures when my

batteries aren't charged!

Next is my new Logitech Desktop Wireless MX3000 (or something close to that.) Overall, I'd say it's a very nice set. The only downside is that it's not really a Mac keyboard, and having a

Winkey instead of a Command key and all that really throws you off surprisingly. The mouse is awesome though, it has Laser tracking (No, not optical) that works very well on any surface (and I know

they said that about optical, but this thing seriously does well)

I also bought an LCD for external use of my MacBook when I feel in a desktop mood. I bought a Staples brand 17'' model, 1280×1024 resolution with DVI and VGA. It also included a nifty little USB

hub built-in to the stand. For what I paid (230 something) it's kinda crappy. As you can see, one of the pixels is stuck on blue, which I haven't been able to fix yet. The box didn't even include

the screws to attack the base to the monitor, speaking of which, doesn't work very well. Compared to the Dell and Apple monitors I've used before, it's very awkward to adjust, and shakes a bit just

sitting on my desk. I probably wouldn't buy it again, and might even consider returning it because of the broken pixel. However, it is thinner and has more features-per-buck than any of the other

models I compared.

If you're looking for a cheap LCD with decent specs (and DVI) this is for you, but if you have the money, buy a Dell or Apple display.

Finally the Logitech wireless headset I bought off Trent. It's really awesome, the Mic is decent, and I can walk around with it like a cordless phone. (It even has phone jacks on the side for

it.)

Merry Christmas!

It's the 24th, and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! It's funny, here in Canada we've become so conscious of multiculturalism, it's as if he word Merry Christmas seem awkward or

taboo, but I'm going to go on the other side of the debate, in that I wish greetings that I celebrate. If you celebrate Hanukkah, I won't mind if you tell me Happy Hanukkah.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Holidays Start!

So I finally have two weeks off school! Yay! Meaning lots of fun stuff and time to do cool things on the computer.

Also, just on a side note…my homepage now has Digg articles on it. It's not advertising or anything, but rather PageRank lifter. Google gave me a null PageRank, and after testing out my use of

PHP-included digg feeds on the AHTR Homepage, I realize how much automatic fresh content can be valuable.

What am I talking about? Well Google develops what's called a "PageRank" for every page on the Internet it indexes. This is based on how often it is updated, how many pages with high page rank

link to it, when it was last updated, etc. By adding ever-changing content to my main page, Google thinks I'm changing my website all the time, raising my PageRank.

Hope you don't mind the little links, I find myself clicking the ones on the AHTR homepage quite often, so maybe you'll find something interesting yourself!

Merry Christmas!

Server Upgrade

Trent and I spent last night setting up the rack for the server, and boy is it fast. The databases are up, thus => gallery is up. Thumbnail generation is going to be way faster now, so I

don't have to "ping" all the photos after posting them to get them to cache, and just in general, gallery should be faster with better hard drive and MySQL access.

Enjoy the…servering?

Some Downtime

Today AHTR got a new server, and we're in the process of setting it up. Please excuse any downtime, especially in the gallery, as it will probably be offline until we get MySQL going well.

Good thing the blog's powered by joleblog though! 🙂

Life as a Soundman

While working hard, (or hardly working) as the soundman for the musical at our school, my friend came up with this excellent Flash animation on my computer. Bravo sure beats my outdated flash skills.

Video no longer available

New Gallery Style

So, I changed the gallery. The one before looked good, but in IE 7 the links were totally broken. Overall it was just overdone with all the JavaScript and stuff, so I changed to something

simpler. (Which I like!)

Anyways, enjoy the new gallery. Hopefully it'll work better for you!

Windows Vista

As we approach the launch of Windows Vista this January, I just thought I'd let you know that analyst expect Microsoft to spend an outrageous amount of money promoting it. Most of you know

that Win 2K/Win95 are my most favorite versions of Windows, and as you probably don't recall (you were 3-4 years old) Windows 95 had a huge launch with millions spent promoting it. First off, there's a

couple of videos on YouTube from those days, most noticeable this one:

What I found hilarious was the Compaq 486 that get's flashed for a second which I used to own.

Of course, there were also some who hated of Windows 95. Like this video:

(even more hilarious if you know the real songs)

Now, the question is, even with all this money that Microsoft will be putting into promote Vista, will we really end up with some cool videos like this one that will be a memory of my childhood

for as long as I live:

Or, will we end up with a ad's like this one, still featuring that common Flying Around theme. I noticed that it showed a lot of features in XP that don't actually work. Send photo's by email? As

if. Windows Movie Maker 1 (also shown) was a nightmare, and when they did update it, old projects weren't compatible.

Either way, please Microsoft, don't use Madonna songs in your commercials.
